DISSERTATION
“The Compositional Evolution of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony, its Formal Design and Tonal Strategies.”
Committee: Dr. Erik Lund, Chair; Dr. Katherine Syer, Co-Advisor; Dr. William Kinderman, Co-Advisor; & Dr. Erin Gee
Description: This dissertation examines and analyses the evolution of Mahler’s Tenth Symphony. It establishes and compares different stages of composition, revealing details that hint at a very different work prior to the discovery of his wife’s affair at the end of July 1910. Aborted formal and harmonic experimentation is chronicled extensively.
